Results of the 2005 Journal Subscription Cancellation Project

After discussion and consultation with faculty representatives and others, the subject specialist librarians have selected the following titles for retention. This cancellation project was a difficult activity for the librarians since we would prefer to license and provide access to all relevant research, teaching, and patient care materials needed by UC Davis faculty, staff, and students. Librarians will continue to monitor economic conditions affecting the Library’s ability to purchase, to license, and to access books, journals, and other media, and to make judicious selections in consultation with faculty to support the existing and new academic programs and research interests of UC Davis.
1824 titles were proposed for possible cancellation for the subscription year 2005. 873 titles represented journals available in both electronic and print formats and are included in packages negotiated by the California Digital Library. The remaining titles fall into the following categories: duplicate copies, dual formats (electronic and print), or low use print-only journals. Based on faculty consultations, 145 titles were retained for subscription year 2005 and will be monitored for use. The retained titles represent unique content within the UC system or exceptional use by faculty or students. All other titles will be cancelled for 2005.
Thanks to the librarian subject specialists and faculty who worked collaboratively and cooperatively to determine changes in academic programs which affect research, teaching, and patient care. We wish to leverage the funds available to support the University’s academic programs. Please feel free to consult with your librarian subject specialist if you have questions or comments.
